Furniture from Thonet

Who is not familiar with the famous bistro stools, bentwood rocking chairs or steel-tubed seating of the Bauhaus era? For almost two hundred years the family-owned firm Thonet has been writing the history of furniture. For the first time, an exhibit will display not only Thonet`s classics of yesterday, but also focus on the firm’s development since 1945. Even those well-acquainted with Thonet are in for a surprise. Few are familiar with the diverse models of the 1950s and ‘60s, or know that design giants like Norman Foster, Verner Panton and Konstantin Grcic have designed for the firm. The exhibited pieces, about 130 in total, testify to a successful synthesis of tradition and contemporary design. The spectrum reaches from the simple kitchen stool, spinning office chair, cantilever chair, club chair and various rocking chairs to medical reclining chairs, garden seating, and children’s furniture. A few models, newly manufactured, will be available for testing – visitors can take a seat and experience Thonet’s designs first-hand.
